Continuing to help out Pearlington, Miss.
Weston has concentrated its charitable giving related to the August 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster on the town of Pearlington, Miss.
Pearlington was leveled by the storm surge, which bore up the Pearl River. Because of its unincorporated status, the town was ineligible for state aid.
Weston’s churches, schools and civic groups have provided financial assistance, as well as time and talent, for a new community center and for temporary housing. Since the hurricane, many Weston residents have made the pilgrimage from Weston to Pearlington to assist directly in rebuilding efforts under the able leadership of the Building Goodness Foundation, based in Charlottesville, Va.
An unusual boost to the rebuilding will take place on Aug. 22, when Weston’s Mary Shaw and Bill Sano will perform their live music and history show, “Songs of World War II,” for the citizens of Pearlington in the community center, which will be completed in the fall.
“Neither of us is good with a hammer or screwdriver, but we’re experienced entertainers,” said Shaw. “When we were invited to perform our show at the Smithsonian Institute’s National World War II Museum in New Orleans, we immediately wondered if we could do something for Pearlington at the same time.”
The duo of Shaw and Sano has performed their show many times locally over the past year, as well as in Maine, New Hampshire and Ohio. They were guest performers for the National Park Service at Mount Rushmore during the July 4, 2007 celebrations.
The hour-long program describes the music and culture of the U.S. during a time when the entire population supported the war effort, whether through military service or through at-home roles ranging from saving cooking grease and scrap materials to rolling bandages or sending care packages to soldiers in the front lines. Twenty-two songs recall the sacrifices and celebrations of the World War II era.
Sano is music director at First Parish Church in Weston, and Shaw sings classical and popular music for church and community groups.
Sponsorship “tickets” for the show being performed before Pearlington residents are being sold in Weston for $50 each. First Parish Church has purchased an initial block of 10 tickets, and it is hoped that other groups will generously continue their assistance to the rebuilding efforts. All of the proceeds will go toward Pearlington’s Hurricane Katrina relief, as Shaw and Sano are donating their time and transportation.
